NOAA Predicts Busy Atlantic Hurricane Season...Have you backed up your data...?

New York, July 27, 2006 — Do you have a disaster-preparedness plan in place? Plywood can protect your windows, your family can evacuate, but what will protect your computer, save your data? According to the U.S. National Archives, 31% of PC users have lost all of their PC files to events beyond their control.

Last year was the busiest and deadliest hurricane season on record with 28 named storms, including 15 hurricanes. For the 2006 north Atlantic hurricane season, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) is predicting 13 to 16 named storms, with eight to 10 becoming hurricanes, of which four to six could become 'major' hurricanes of Category 3 strength or higher. According to the National Climatic Data Center, Hurricane Katrina caused an estimated $100 billion in damage, making it the most expensive natural disaster in U.S. history.

With the 2006 hurricane season already upon us, it is vital to act proactively. In order to ensure proper data protection, Data Deposit Box has developed a list of 5 tips that can protect your precious items such as stored photos, as well as business data and confidential documents:

1. Store All Data in One Place

  • Use the 'My Documents’ folder and preferably keep it on a separate disk partition
  • Be organized and use a consistent folder structure

2. Backup Daily with an Automated Backup Tool

  • Monthly backups are better than nothing, but how much can you lose between infrequent backups?
  • If you forget to do something, will your backup still happen?
  • Remember: hard disks can fail without notice

3. Don't Forget Your Email

  • Do you know where your email file is kept?
  • Restoring email data can sometimes be difficult

4. Test Your Backup Frequently

  • Did you select all the folders you need to backup?
  • Have you tried restoring your data?

5. Store Backup Data in a Geographically Remote Location

  • If you are affected by a disaster, will your backup vendor also be affected?
  • Keep copies of your software CDs and license keys
  • How can you access your data in an emergency?
